Drinking Mudslides & Pondering Life

Posted June 27, 2011

Or at least I'm drinking Mudslides ;-O

Actually, Kahlua aside, I've been spending some time today reading & videoing up on the Knox case. What amazes me beyond the case itself, and about American society in general, is the endless number of arm-chair critics who have decided this girl is guilty based on a handful of speculative media reports. I actually read several comments wherein people made "genius" (cough) judgments on Amanda Knox's guilt or innocence based on REALLY stupid things, like catching her in a lie.

Like THEY have never told a lie. And like everyone who has told a lie is a ruthless killer. (Because, yeah, that's logical.) Umm... okay.

What's sad is the fact that these arm-chair critics are the same people who comprise juries. In the words of Mark Twain, a jury consists of 12 people who decide which side has the better lawyer. And Twainisms aside, they bring into the courtroom all their prejudices, emotions, and belief systems, which are based on upbringing and social mores rather than irrefutable facts and truth.

I vote for computer juries! Judgments should be based 110% on "just the facts, ma'am" with no human prejudices, stereotyping, and emotionalism allowed. No lawyers trying to sway people to believe X, Y, & Z, no judges permitted to withhold evidence from The Digital One. Just facts. Plain, unadulterated, clear-cut facts.

Wow. What a concept.
